Reminders of the HomeAid Mission at HALO Luncheon

I recently had the privilege of attending HomeAid Houston’s annual HALO Luncheon, and I'm still thinking about the impact of that afternoon. Events like this always remind me why the HomeAid mission—to end homelessness—is so
close to my heart, but this year’s luncheon felt especially meaningful.

From the moment I walked into the room, there was a sense of warmth and connection. Chastity White of Story Built Homes, our emcee, brought an energy that pulled everyone in. She made the space feel both joyful and intentional, guiding us through moments that made us laugh, pause, and reflect. You could tell she cared deeply about the people in the room and the mission behind the event, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

A special highlight was seeing Toy Wood honored with the Star Award for her service and dedication. The applause and appreciation in the room spoke volumes—a true testament to her commitment to HomeAid Houston, the Greater Houston Builders Association, and the countless lives she has touched through her leadership and compassion.

But the moment that stayed with me the most was when Sakenya Waltham shared her story. The honesty, vulnerability, and strength she brought to that stage were unforgettable. She spoke about the difficulties she faced after leaving the military, the uncertainty of starting over in Texas, and how finding resources in her community helped her find stability when she truly needed it. Listening to her made me realize that our mission is not just an idea we talk about—it’s real people, real families, real turning points.

Her story also connected so strongly to this year’s Homelessness Awareness Month theme, “Someone You Know.” It was a reminder that homelessness isn’t something happening to “other people” far away—it can touch the lives of people we know and care about. Sakenya’s journey made that truth feel incredibly close and incredibly personal.

Attending as a representative of HomeAid America, I was proud of the work our affiliates are doing across the country. Every event, story, and community gathering reminds us that we are part of something larger—a mission and a movement to end homelessness for our neighbors, and maybe even for someone we know.

It's easy to talk about building a future without homelessness. It’s another thing entirely to sit in a room filled with people who are making it happen—build by build, story by story, one act of kindness at a time… one donation at a time 😊.

To the entire HomeAid Houston team: thank you for creating such a beautiful, inspiring event. I left feeling grateful, energized, and proud to be part of this mission.
