Pat Riley and HomeAid Help Wounded Veterans

Pat Riley and HomeAid Create HomeAid® Wounded Veterans Program

Today's U.S. military veterans are returning from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan with debilitating physical and mental injuries.

According to industry research, one in three veterans returning from Iraq and one in nine veterans returning from Afghanistan will face a mental health issue like depression, anxiety or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the signature wound of the Iraq War, is an invisible wound that often goes undiagnosed and untreated, but can lead to serious emotional problems as well as physical problems and memory loss. Veterans' advocates believe that 59% of veteran blast victims have TBI.

As with former Vietnam veterans, homelessness is becoming a major problem for today's veterans. But unlike Vietnam veterans where homelessness occurred years after leaving the service, today's soldiers who become homeless are doing so within a year.

NBA head coach Pat Riley and HomeAid have created the HomeAid® Wounded Veterans Program in order to build dignified housing with educational services, job-skills training, and nurturing support that enable today's wounded veterans to return to a productive life back home.

Since 1989, HomeAid, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, has successfully marshaled the resources of the construction industry to build and donate housing to organizations that serve children and families that are temporarily homeless. HomeAid has built more than 150 facilities; it has serviced more than 80,000 individuals; and it has developed a housing portfolio that exceeds $200 million. Through HomeAid, the Wounded Veterans Program will build housing facilities across the U.S. that will be donated to organizations that provide the support and educational services for veterans.

The HomeAid® Wounded Veterans Program plans to build a minimum of ten facilities across the country within the next five years in locations such as Houston, Miami, Los Angeles and New
York.
