HomeAid and Mission of Yahweh Dedicate New Mercy House for Hurricane Evacuees
HOUSTON - October 13, 2006 - A team of local and national building industry leaders responsible for the successful construction of HomeAid Houston's Mission of Yahweh "Mercy House," will host a Dedication Ceremony and ribbon cutting on October 19, 2006 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mercy House, which was funded by HomeAid's Gulf Coast Rebuilding Fund, will focus on housing evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who are still in need of housing more than a year after the storms.
Doyle Stuckey, of Doyle Stuckey Homes and Randy Blanchard, of Green Mountain Building Company, served as Co-Builder Captains, providing in-kind donations of resources and labor for the 3,400 square foot project. In addition, the project was made possible through a $3 million dollar donation from Ameriquest Mortgage Company, Argent Mortgage Company and AMC Mortgage Services, who approached HomeAid in September 2005 to establish a fund to build housing for displaced hurricane victims in the Gulf Coast.
With the completion of construction, The Mission of Yahweh's Mercy House will be providing an additional 16 units of transitional housing for hurricane evacuees. The Mission of Yahweh is a 44 year institution in Houston that has provided shelter, food and clothing to countless women and children in need.
Attending the ceremony will be Doyle Stuckey, President of Doyle Stuckey Homes; Randy Blanchard, President of Green Mountain Building Co., Brian Binash, President of HomeAid Houston; Amy Cobb with Ameriquest Mortgage Company., Diane Dempcy, Director for HomeAid's Gulf Coast Rebuilding Fund; Bette Moser, Executive Director of HomeAid Houston, and Anthony Love, CEO, Coalition for the Homeless for Houston and Harris County.
Also participating in the dedication will be DeUndra Johnson, Director of The Mission of Yahweh, Randy Bayer, GHBA President and a number of elected officials.
HomeAid Houston, a charity sponsored by the Greater Houston Builders Association, provides construction of homeless housing for deserving homeless service agencies through the use of donated construction management services, labor and material, provided by GHBA members. HomeAid Houston is one of 17 HomeAid Chapters around the United States.
There are many stories of women moving on to better times with the help of The Mission of Yahweh. Over seven years ago, Laurie Fleming was a resident of the Mission. While living there she obtained her associates degree; she then went on to receive her nursing degree and is now working on her master's degree in nursing. Rhetta Jones, a more recent resident of the Mission, is now working as a hospital therapist. Both women continue to serve the Mission as volunteers and donors.
Doyle Stuckey of Doyle Stuckey Homes stated, "What a privilege it is for me to be associated again with The Mission of Yahweh. When I built the family dormitory fifteen years ago, I never dreamed I would be blessed again in serving the Mission by constructing Mercy House."
Randy Blanchard, Green Mountain Building Company and twenty-year member of The Mission of Yahweh board of directors shared that, "The greatest measure of the character of an individual, or an organization, is how they respond in crisis. The GHBA, HomeAid, Ameriquest, and every other organization and person involved in this project, have once again proven their character and integrity by stepping forward in this time of need."
GHBA members who donated labor and materials to the project include: Amegy Bank; Integrity Concrete; Capital Heating and Air; DR Signs; Goodman Manufacturing; Suncoast Post-Tension, Builders Iron, Burgess Construction Consultants, Dennis Eby Engineers, Excell Foundations, Home Team Pest Defense, Leilani's Design Assoc., Merit Millwork and Sun Landscaping.
"We appreciate the contribution made by the Gulf Coast Rebuilding Fund," said Bette Moser, executive director of HomeAid Houston. "We are also grateful for the efforts of our Builder Captains and all of the generous vendors and suppliers who helped make the Mission of Yahweh possible."
The Mission of Yahweh's Mercy House is located at 10247 Algiers, Houston, TX 77041.
