Lisa (parent of former resident), Sacramento, CA

My daughter is a special needs child. Inappropriate behavior began early on at home and in day care. It became apparent Katie could no longer remain safely at home. Katie was a danger to herself and others, and required constant supervision.

I was devastated when all avenues failed. The School District and County Mental Health recommended residential placement at River Oak Center for Children. I was humiliated and horrified. I was full of self-doubt. What did I do wrong? What was going to happen to this cherished little girl? What was her future going to be like? As a parent, I had so many dreams and aspirations for my daughter.

My daughter, now 19 years old, was a resident of River Oak Center for four years. She attended River Oak Center's Nonpublic Day School during her stay. Part of that program requires parents to become involved in the healing process along with their children.

I was apprehensive and had no idea what was going to happen to Katie or myself. My multitude of concerns were quickly alleviated. Staff members and counselors were knowledgeable and honest. There was always an open line of communication with me. Katie is now living with a mentor family and is part of a community-based program where she learns independent living skills. I am fortunate and proud to be part of this great team.
